Tilling - an important strategy of reverse genetics

Mutant plant populations draw the special interest of scientists and breeders. They allow to identify novel alleles of genes and by this help to understand the function of special genes ("reverse genetics"), some of them with high commercial value. The GABI-Till project - bridge between model and crop plants

One of the most central aims of the GABI 2 program, is the use and the transfer of knowledge gained in model systems for their application in crop species. The GABI-Till project aims at the implementation of a powerful infrastructure to rapidly identify mutations in (candidate) genes in crop species and to determine their roles in the expression of agriconomically / commercially important traits in crops. As soon as the screening procedures have been settled and the screens for mutations in the initially defined target genes have been completed (and the viability and efficiency of the procedures have been demonstrated), the screening platform will be opened to screens requested by all members of the GABI community.

Gain of expertise in this area and the establishment of own resources such as mutant collections and DNA stocks is a prerequisite for participation in international activities.
